“To know that you do not know is the best.
To pretend to know when you do not know is a disease.” ― Lao Tzu
Insightful words from Lao Tzu, from about 2500 years ago. Wow that’s a long time isn’t it? Two thousand five hundred years.
I mean, 500 years ago from today it was the 1500s – the time of Leonardo Da Vinci and Michelangelo.
Now, go back another FOUR times 500 years, and we come to the time of Lao Tzu.
Strange because when you look at his words — to pretend you know when you do not know is a disease — what is he saying?
He’s actually clearly stating that: any form of Beliefs are a Disease – which would mean any form of Opinion where you do not actually Know / Understand / See something, anything where you’re placing for example your Trust, and Faith into a point of for instance, ohhh let’s say Imagining what will happen to you when you Die, or Imagining that there is a God, or making up Stories to explain where our thoughts, feelings, and emotions come from, or – a popular one these days is to make up stories about invisible ‘higher selves’ of others ‘choosing’ for them to have experiences like Poverty, or Starvation — All of those kinds of things would be classified by Lao Tzu as a Disease because — it’s clearly a point of Pretending you Know something — when Self Honestly — you Don’t Know – it’s just an Opinion.
So, if we are to apply the Wisdom of Lao Tzu, which is the way of the Tao, we will give up all Religions, all forms of Spirituality, all forms of Faith and Trust placed in any kind of Opinion, Story, Assumption, Belief, Idea — anything where we are merely PRETENDING we know something, when we do not in fact Know / See.
Because – Lao Tzu clearly states – any such games of Pretend are a Disease.
Why is Pretending, why are Beliefs a Disease?
Well let’s examine. In the past 2500 years since Lao Tzu was on Earth, have we seen an increase in the proliferation of Beliefs and Religions, and Spiritualities within Humanity? Have we seen an increase in the proliferation of Stories, Ideas, Opinions, Interpretations, Assumptions – mostly to do with God and the Afterlife and ‘Why we are Here’, that we use to ‘Explain’ the events on Earth that we don’t like to look at?
Definitely. So we can already see that, since the time of Lao Tzu and our time today — there has not been any application of the Tao Te Ching.
Now, you’d think that over the centuries, as our Technology and Understanding of how to process the resources provided by the Earth advanced and became more refined and sophisticated, that naturally along with these advancements – for example in transportation, communication, electricity, infrastructure, that Humanity would have become more and more Unified under the Benefits of these Advancements. You would think that – if one area of the population can live in Health, Comfort, with Education, Food, Water, Clothing Homes, and that if the Output of our Technology more than exceeds the requirements of the Entire population, that Naturally — we would have included the Entire Population to receive the Benefits we can Produce.
Yet – this has not happened at all.
Strangely, 2500 years after Lao Tzu, there are still people on Earth living in conditions that can be easily described as being like the Dark Ages. No Money and no way to make money, no education, little or no food, rampant disease and malnutrition, unsanitary living conditions, constant danger and threat of harm, rape, or enslavement by another who seeks a way to survive / make money or release pent up energies of stress and frustration for example, and a government more concerned with its own advances of power and profit and titles than with the well being of its people.
And yet – in spite of the fact that, when we look at the figures:
According to the United Nations it would cost $30 Billion a year to end hunger in the world.
…the funds that the U.S. spends on military defense – $737 billion in 2012.
And — “According to the Forbes report released in March 2013, there are currently 1,426 U.S. dollar billionaires worldwide, boasting a combined total net worth of $5.4 trillion”. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billionaire
And — “Hunger is caused by poverty and inequality, not scarcity. For the past two decades, the rate of global food production has increased faster than the rate of global population growth. The world already produces more than 1 ½ times enough food to feed everyone on the planet. That’s enough to feed 10 billion people, the population peak we expect by 2050. But the people making less than $2 a day — most of whom are resource-poor farmers cultivating unviably small plots of land — can’t afford to buy this food.”http://www.huffingtonpost.com/eric-holt-gimenez/world-hunger_b_1463429.html
So, as we can see — no one can Pretend that there exist such things as ‘Developing Nations’ in which it is apparently ‘Normal’, and ‘Natural’ to have Poverty and Starvation and preventable Disease.
Because the fact is — we have the Tools we Need to Provide for All on Earth.
Obviously, the problem is that we are all Pretending that it’s ‘too big’ of a task, to actually Change ourselves and USE what we have, in a way that is Best for Everyone.
And, unfortunately, the World’s Religions and Spiritualities have proven to Support and Allow this Destructive, Abusive game of Pretend, through their own preoccupation with the Pretty Pictures, Nice Feelings, and Nice Sounding explanations to be found in the Ideas and Beliefs and Assumptions about things like ‘Higher Selves’, and ‘Divine Plans’, and ‘Ascension Processes’, and apparent ‘Choices’ made by others ‘Before their Birth’ in some ‘Higher Dimension’, to experience Poverty or Starvation or Enslavement or Rape or Torture or being Blown up by a Bomb. Which again — if we have to be Self Honest —
is just a game of Pretending we Know – when we do not in fact Know – because, we actually KNOW that we have merely taken Knowledge and Ideas and CONstruct elaborate Fantasies in our Minds that we then claim is ‘Reality’ – because we like to Believe that if it Feels Beautiful and Looks Beautiful then — it must be Truth!
But —- Lao Tzu even said:
And what do we end up doing? Dedicating our Lives to the Way of Disease, which is the way of Imagination and Belief and Pretending we Know that ‘Everything is Perfect’ and Pretending we Know that ‘we don’t have any responsibility toward Life, but only to our own Beauty and Happiness’. And meanwhile, the Truth is that those that claim Ownership of the Earth’s Resources for Personal Profit and Gain and Greed – continue to abuse life – and we Allow it, by giving them the Right to Pretend that what they’re doing is not a Crime.
And so – we are as the Spiritual and Religious Believers Complicit in the Crimes Against Life of those who value Profit and Greed above what is Best for All, through our Acceptance and Allowance of ourselves to weave ourselves into a Web of Pretend, so that all we see is the Beauty of our Beliefs and so we don’t have to look at Reality. And we even Brainwash our Children to copy this behavior without any consideration of how we could support our children to develop an Honor and Responsibility toward All Life on Earth as a Steward of Earth.
We only have Stewards of Stupidity – Guardians of Belief, Guardians of Pretend, Guardians of Self Interest.
In fact I Guarantee that anyone on Earth who currently Reads and claims to Understand the Tao Te Ching — has failed to Apply the simple Realization that — Playing Pretend, Pretending we Know when we do not Know, is a Disease. Even in spite of the Obvious evidence showing that when Human Decisions are left up to Belief and Pretend – we create nothing but Abuse, Separation, Justification, Division, Suffering, Neglect.
We do not need Beliefs. Beliefs are Destructive. Beliefs Justify the Suffering and Pain of others Daily – and this Justification comes from the mouths of those who claim to be the most Wise, the most Enlightened, the most Positive. What would Lao Tzu have to say?
We Pretend we cannot and do not know what is Best for All. But – if you investigate yourself a bit, you’ll find that Any such claim exists only as Pretend. Any such claim is dependent on Belief, Opinion, Assumption, and Dishonesty – with some form of Thoughts and Reactions that will always steer you toward some Idea that ‘Feels Good’ – rather than looking Directly, Self Honestly at Reality.
And many would say – well I don’t have time to take on these big things like Poverty or Starvation. And I don’t have time to Investigate myself and face all the points where I’m lying to myself and playing Pretend. And I don’t have time to change myself and learn how to live without Beliefs. And I only have this life, so I don’t have time to deal with anything but my own interests, and I need to make the best for My Time by doing only what makes me Happy.
But here — Lao Tzu’s words again should be considered:
“Time is a created thing. To say ‘I don’t have time,’ is like saying, ‘I don’t want to.”
― Lao Tzu
So here, if you actually stand as Life – seeing that within each one is actually an Equality and Timelessness as Life — we’ll see that — we cannot say ‘I don’t have time’. Because as Life — I am Timeless. As Life – I am born into this world every day. And so it is a question of whether I will Care for Myself as Life — or whether I will say ‘I don’t want to’. But obviously, we do only have so much Time in this Life in this Body, having already spent years growing up and achieving a certain position in the world — it would be a Shame to Waste this opportunity and have to come back and start from Scratch, not Knowing if you would Fall on the same point of Pretend. So, we may be Timeless as Life — but we are in a Space Time world where we have a Window of Opportunity as This Life, in which to Change the Course of Humanity.
It’s 2013 – and as December 21st 2012 showed us so clearly, when you Trust in what you Pretend you Know — you end up a Fool who has Wasted Time. Time that could be used in developing Trust in ourselves, and Trust in Each other through learning how to Live within what we can See, Touch, Smell, Hear – with what is Here as Reality without Belief, in ways that are Best for All.
